Using a Synoptic-Scale Mixing Diagnostic to Explain Global Precipitation Variability from Weekly to Interannual Time Scales

چکیده

Abstract Precipitation often happens along organized filaments or bands of moisture such as convergence zones. Recent regional studies have shown that these arise from synoptic-scale mixing features known attracting Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs). In this study, we present a climatology and investigate its covariability with precipitation on temporal scales ranging weekly to interannual. We characterize the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE), measure parcel deformation, in ERA5 data between 1980 2009. Attracting LCSs are identified ridges FTLE. At interannual time scale, compare El Niño La Niña events find composites anomalies share similar spatial patterns. also summer winter seasons seasonal-mean characteristics, being particularly intense (weak) where is strong (weak). particular, patterns closely match typical signatures intertropical zone (ITCZ) monsoon systems migrations extratropical cyclone tracks. subseasonal employ daily influence Madden–Julian oscillation North Atlantic Oscillation regimes east Pacific; our results indicate oscillations control horizontal occurrence suppress enhance precipitating like ITCZ South zone. The presented first powerful diagnostics identify circulation mechanisms underlying variability.

Characterizing ecosystem-atmosphere interactions from short to interannual time scales

Characterizing ecosystem-atmosphere interactions in terms of carbon and water exchange on different time scales is considered a major challenge in terrestrial biogeochemical cycle research. The respective time series currently comprise an observation period of up to one decade. In this study, we explored whether the observation period is already sufficient to detect cross-relationships between ...

Climate Change Impact on Precipitation Extreme Events in Uncertainty Situation; Passing from Global Scale to Regional Scale

Global warming and then climate change are important topics studied by researchers throughout the world in the recent decades. In these studies, climatic parameters changes are investigated. Considering large-scaled output of AOGCMs and low precision in computational cells, uncertainty analysis is one of the principles in doing hydrological studies. For this reason, it is tried that investigati...

Interannual variability in western US precipitation

Low-frequency (interannual or longer period) climatic variability is of interest, because of its significance for the understanding and prediction of protracted climatic anomalies. Since precipitation is one of the key variables driving various hydrologic processes, it is useful to examine precipitation records to better understand long-term climate dynamics. Here, we use the multi-taper method...
